Who will help these free agents? PSA
Written by Rex Jaybels

Spring Training is upon us and who isn't excited? The Cubs, Sox and Brewers will all see their first action Thursday. There are a few however, that won't be taking the field, and for those unfortunate souls there is this PSA (and don't worry, no free agents were harmed in the making of this video, though I can't actually confirm that).

In honor of Jerod's piece from Midwest Sports Fans comparing possibly the two worst sports casts in history, Lorchcast and Boom Goes the Dynamite, I thought I would share this little nugget I found.

In this clip Sarah Heath, known better to you as Sarah Palin, does the nightly sports broadcast for Channel 2 News, and every so often you get to see Brian Collins drop a "Boom Goes the Dynamite."

As an added bonus, you get to hear Sarah say things like, "I-dit-a-rod," "Beaver Showdown," and "Slams it in."

LT released, can anyone top Emmitt's record

The San Diego Chargers released LaDainian Tomlinson Monday, and while it's hard to forget how good LT was just four years ago, when he rushed for over 1,800-yards and 28 touchdowns, it does make me wonder if any player will be able to eclipse the 18,355-yards that Emmitt Smith rushed for over his 13-year career.

Many aren't aware of the exact number or the list of names in line to go after that particular NFL record, but Tomlinson was thought to be the one that was going to break it. He stands today free to join any team that might be interested and some 7,000 yards from the top.

Talent, durability and a dominating line team helped Emmitt jump the great Walter Payton, and in a league that has transitioned to the passing game, you have to wonder who might be the one to begin a chase towards Smith, if anyone can.

Below is the list of the NFL's rushing leaders, with active players in red:

Memorable (sports) apologies
Written by Rex Jaybels

alg_tiger-woods

There are few times in the common man's life when he feels has a leg up on celebrities and professional athletes. Most of the time we are watching them on screens as they make us laugh, make us cry, or entertain us with their athletic prowess. But when said celeb gets into a personal mess, we've got 'em. We seem to revel in it.

Today Tiger Woods will make a public apology to the country, because Lord knows there is nothing I need more today than for Tiger to look me in the eye and explain why he chose to cheat on his wife, it is the very least he could do for me. I will receive the answers I so desperately seek, as this multi-billionaire begs for my forgiveness.

In anticipation of the big "event" I thought we could take a look back at some other public apologies, because let's be honest, they make us feel just a little bit better about ourselves. (Read More after the jump)

Happy Anniversary James "Buster" Douglas

On this date 20-years ago, one of the greatest upsets in boxing history took place. James "Buster" Douglas squared off against "Iron" Mike Tyson in Tokyo, Japan. At the time, Tyson was considered to be the best boxer in the world and arguably one of the most feared heavyweight champions in history due to his utter domination of the division. The Mirage Casino in Las Vegas, the only casino to make odds on the fight, had Douglas as a 42 to 1 underdog for the fight. Buster shocked the world that evening, and now I present to you my favorite knock out of all-time, Punch-Out! style:

Brett Favre Super Bowl Commercial
Written by Abraham Jaroszewski
Friday, 05 February 2010 09:51

Brett Favre appearing in a ridiculous Hyundai commercial is as absurd as him saying that he is going out on top. Between this inevitable mockery and his Sear's commercial, one can only wonder what is going on inside Lord Favre's head. Between his putrid passes and his coin-flip retirement decisions, America has grown tired of Brett Favre. Seriously Favre, go away.

The sad thing is, there is still a part of me that cannot hate this man.

The Saints, New Orleans, Jim Gray and my cynicism
Written by Rex Jaybels

article-1249312-0831baa9000005dc-833_468x286

I never addressed the Super Bowl, though I got many emails hammering me for lack of coverage (no I didn't). Something had been bothering me for some time leading up to the game, but I bit my tongue. Then, Jim Gray grabbed a mic for Westwood One:

“Finally something good has happened to the city of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. A team that’s first 20 seasons didn’t have a winning record.  It led to boos and bags over the fans heads. The Ain’ts, they ain’t no more. Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city, the winds so strong, the water too deep. Like many of the city’s residents the team itself was homeless. Bouncing from Baton Rouge to San Antonio, the team barely held together, but didn’t move permanently and began to rebuild. Funny how a city that was ravaged by wind, is now saluting a Brees.

When Drew Brees arrived four seasons ago, it was beginning of the end of the suffering for both the city and the franchise. He said he felt it was his calling, his destiny to come to the Saints at their worst time. Now they are calling him Breesus; the city renamed Drew Orleans.

The Mannings were the first family of the Saints, the first family of the city of New Orleans. Now they get the prize they so long wanted, by Archie and his boys, a Super Bowl Championship for the Saints, only it comes in a fashion they would have preferred to avoid." (Audio here from 670 The Score, on the fifth tag)

Instead of focusing on whether or not the years of ineptitude Saints fans suffered was enough of a story, as in, "Holy sh*t, the SAINTS won the Super Bowl!?," Gray decided to give his monologue a different touch, even if it meant tweeking the facts a tad.

Gray starts off well enough, bringing us back to bag covered faces and a team dubbed the "Ain'ts". Then just as quickly as he hooked me, with his oh-so-poetic voice, I was lost. I personally don't find anything funny, nor ironic, about the quarterback's last name and the natural disaster that belted the city some four plus years ago. Not to mention the fact that the city of New Orleans, from all accounts, withstood the wind from Hurrican Katrina relatively well, rendering this little play on words useless.

Bothered more was I about the fact that Drew Brees (not Breeze) was being dubbed the savior of the city (and the franchise). Is this fair to Drew? Is it true that since Brees' arrival that the city of New Orleans is all better now? I know there have been major strides made, but from all that I read, there are even bigger steps ahead. New Orleans still remains as unoccupied as Detroit, and was the murder capital of the United States in 2009. The state is 2nd poorest in our nation (Source CNNMoney). Heck there were three shootings during the celebration.

But the end is in sight believes Gray.

I understand it's easy to get caught up in things like this, and to want to believe that these games are bigger than they are. But the same way we shouldn't ask out athletes to be our children's role models, we shouldn't expect our sports franchises to do more than win games.

In the same way it is so easy to aggrandize something of this nature, it is easy to dismiss it. I sincerely hope that this victory provides the people who have and are still suffering some distraction from their day to day lives, and I hope I'm wrong, maybe this is something bigger than what I think it is.

Maybe, as Bob Marshall from NOLA writes, this is "the exception to the rule." Maybe, "this team and these fans have bonded into one family, in a way you normally only see on a college campus or a high school gym." Maybe there is a difference between this situation and others that have come before it.
