Bears called out, now must respond

"I like this kind of party." Those infamous words uttered by "Iron" Mike Singletary when he adorned the Bears navy and orange. Tonight the Bears will face Singletary and his 49ers in what has to be considered a must win game for both teams. Both are teetering on the brink of football no man's land.

It all starts up front for the Bears on both sides of the football. The Bears need to protect Jay Cutler better and the defensive line, that was ripped by Vernon Davis, will have to put pressure on Alex Smith while still being stout against Frank Gore and the run game.

It was a short turnaround, which may be a good thing for the Bears who were shredded in Chicago by Kurt Warner and the Cardinals. Now they find themselves at 4-4 with all three of those four losses coming against teams they are trailing in the hunt for the Wild Card.

So what can we expect tonight? I really have no idea. I think the Bears are the better team in this matchup, and I think Jay Cutler is enough to push them over the edge. If I were running the Bears offense, I would take to the air early and often, leaving the running game to be just an after thought.

I have no clue what the Bears defense should do, other than abandon that sham of a scheme they try to run. Obviously that is not going to happen in three days, so it comes down to simple discipline and the Bears players remaining in their gaps and covering all those holes that the Cover-2 leaves for the opponent. I'm looking at Tommie Harris, Alex Brown, Adewale Ogunleye and Anthony Adams. They are the key to improving this defense tonight and for the rest of the season.

Cutler will have to play mistake free football and the Bears can't let Alex Smith beat them, they just can't. I'm picking the Bears here, but nothing would surprise me.

Prediction: Bears 24 - 49ers 21
